FARMERS & FARM FACTS

Located 9 kilometers from La Trinidad, Benguet is our collective farm group. These comprise 7 farmers who have committed themselves in planting vegetables using organic faming methods. Each farmer has undergone a one-month training seminar on the technological trends in organic farming led by Gil Carandang. Specific protocols (methods) were designed for each vegetable crop. It is through these protocols that we are able to improve soil fertility and integrate our pest and disease management program. Gil Carandang has taught our farmers the intensive farming method wherein farmers can economically grow vegetables in small areas and still make a decent profit. Maximizing space and using the proper farm inputs are what gives our farmers the edge.

Since each farm is owned by the farmer and his family, together, we formulate a workable farm plan and harvest schedules of what kind of vegetables they should grow for the season. It is important that crop rotation is practice so as to control fungus and other disease-causing organisms.

Water source is from natural springs located around the mountain area of the collective farms. Another source are 2 deep-well pumps that serve as water assurance during summer. It is noted that we only use natural water and not chlorine-treated water.

Special attention is given to post-harvest procedures. Our farmers fully understand the safety and hygienic procedures in packaging and handling of their harvest. Farm wastes and other bio-degradable garbage are immediately sent to the compost pile and treated with beneficial microorganisms so as to prevent contamination of the harvested produce.

In the future, there are plans to expand our farming operations and increase the planting area. The success of our Farm To Table Program rests entirely on your hands. For we believe that by eating healthy food, you help alleviate the lives of our farmers and their family.
